Message from the Director
The Natural World Museum
is making waves from
San Francisco to Oslo and beyond in 2007!

Mia Hanak receiving the Art for the Environment proclamation from the
City of San Francisco

Making the Choice
On April 19, NWM launched its exhibition Making the Choice: Bringing Forth an Environmental Renaissance in the magnificent rotunda of San Francisco City Hall. The evening program included speeches by Eric Ryan, Co-Founder of Method; Eric Corey Freed, Principal of OrganicARCHITECT; and Gay Browne, Founder of Greenopia. Hundreds of guests perused the exhibit, interacted with an instrumental dance performance, and celebrated as Mayor Gavin Newsom proclaimed April 19 as “Art for the Environment Day” in San Francisco!

As part of NWM’s Art for the Environment Initiative in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme this exhibit will be on display at San Francisco City Hall from Earth Day through UN World Environment Day, closing on June 15.

Lecture Series at the Commonwealth Club

In conjunction with NWM’s Making the Choice exhibit, we are presenting an innovative four-part lecture series that brings artists, authors and scientists together to discuss environmental issues and sustainable solutions.

Envisioning Change: Melting Ice / A Hot Topic
Art for the Environment tours Europe! NWM is launching its upcoming traveling exhibition, Envisioning Change: Melting Ice / A Hot Topic, at the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo, Norway on June 5, UN World Environment Day. The exhibition will be open through the summer, and then tour to the BOZAR Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels, Belgium in the fall.

Global Community Treasure Book

NWM’s Planet Art educational outreach program will wrap up the 2006-2007 school year with the Global Community Treasure Book, featuring works of art from five hundred students from seven countries who participated in this year’s eco-footprint project.

Support Our Groundbreaking Programs
The Natural World Museum is only able to continue offering innovative programs that inspire environmental awareness and action with the support of our local and global community. Every dollar goes a long way; you can show your support today by making a tax deductible donation designated toward one of NWM’s programs.

Warm regards for a beautiful spring,

Mia Hanak

Education

Planet Art

In honor of Earth Day, 120 students from NWM's Planet Art Program participated in the Council of Species parade at San Francisco City Hall for the closing of the Mayor's Earth Day breakfast on Monday, April 23rd.

Internationally, 500 students from seven countries participated in this year's Planet Art program through the eco-footprint project. One footprint represents the natural environment and the other represents man-made things impacting the environment. All 500 works have been compiled into the Global Community Treasure Book.

To view the children's artwork and images from the parade, visit the Education section of our website.

Featured Artist

Lucy & Jorge Orta

This vehicle is a messenger to propel us on the journey and tell us the story about the current state of the earth's water. The light projectors on the vehicle are illuminating the path and guiding us in positive directions. The sounds emitted, are voices, barely audible because they are immersed under water, amidst the eternal rowing sounds of the boat on a vast ocean. The artist is alerting us to the urgency of the water situation - be it the melting of the ice caps, depletion of water resources, drought, or the pollution of our waters.

The Ortas' work is featured in our Making the Choice exhibit, and will be presented in our travelling exhibition, Envisioning Change and in our upcoming book, Art in Action.
