United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)
UNEP is the world's leading environmental agency and the
environmental arm of the United Nations system, created in 1972,
UNEP's mission is to provide leadership and encourage
partnerships in caring for the environment by inspiring,
informing, and enabling nations and peoples to improve their
quality of life without compromising that of the future
generations. Among UNEP's major goals are raising environmental
awareness and promoting actions at all levels of society
worldwide.
In 2005, NWM and UNEP joined forces by generating the Art for
the Environment initiative. Together we provide broad and
diverse audiences with world-class exhibitions to provide
enlightening visitor experiences, knowledge and resources in
order to help advance local and global conservation efforts. Our
site-specific exhibitions are hosted at cultural institutions
around the world and utilize the universal language of art to
motivate individuals, communities, and leaders to focus on
environmental values across cultures.

United Nations World Environment Day
World Environment Day (WED), commemorated each year on June 5th,
is one of the principal vehicles through which the United
Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and
enhances political attention and action. WED is hosted by a
major city in a different country each year. Through the
partnership, UNEP and NWM are working closely with world leaders
and policy makers in the fields of environment, art,
conservation, and education to design and produce world-class
art exhibitions for the host city each year. The exhibition
resonates with the current theme of WED (ie. 2005 - Green Cities
/ 2006 -Deserts, Drylands, and Desertification). NWM puts out an
international call for artists, and has an all-star curatorial
jury select the final works. The artwork ranges from traditional
forms to innovative multimedia visions. The final works of art
are integrated into an exhibition plan designed to tell a story
featuring major environmental issues, identifying local and
global impacts, and providing conservation resources on how
people can take personal action in becoming a part of the
solution.
