Message from the
Director
Dear NWM Community,
This
fall has been an exciting time for the Natural
World Museum. On October 5th, we celebrated the
opening of our exhibit and the presentation of
our symposium in Brussels, the city known as ‘the
Heart of Europe’. This was a big step toward
building our relationship with the European community,
and also brought us global media attention. We
will continue our presence in Europe through additional
events in October. |

Industry Strategy and Relations at Autodesk, Inc.; Paul Dujardin, General
Director, BOZAR Centre for Fine Arts; Mia Hanak, Founding Executive Director,

Falt, Director, Division of Communications and Public Information, UNEP.

Here’s a look at this fall's activities -- an exhibit
opening, a symposium, and a book launch!
Melting Ice / A Hot Topic: Envisioning Change
After the successful launch of this exhibit at
the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo, Norway in June,
the exhibit travelled to Brussels, Belgium, and
opened at the BOZAR Centre for Fine Arts on October
5th, where up to 300,000 visitors will experience
the exhibit over the next three months. In 2008,
Melting Ice: Envisioning Change will
travel to Monaco for the United Nations Environment
Programme’s Governing Council in February,
and then to the Field Museum in Chicago in time
for Earth Day in April.
Art in Action
Nature, Creativity, and Our Collective Future
NWM
will celebrate its US book launch for Art
in Action with a special artist reception
at the Catharine Clark Gallery in San Francisco,
on October 30. Please see below for more information

with the opening of the exhibit in Brussels, Natural
World Museum (NWM) and the United Nations Environment
Programme (UNEP) hosted our annual “Art
for the Environment Symposium,” bringing
together international leaders from the worlds
of art, environment, literature, policy, and technology.
Audio and video recordings of this groundbreaking
symposium are available at www.artintoaction.org/events.

Environmental Leadership
Countdown 2010 Biodiversity Target
Countdown 2010 is working to mobilize governments and citizens
worldwide to take action to save biodiversity. Nearly all countries of
the world came together for the World Summit on Sustainable Development
in 2002 and promised to ‘achieve by 2010 a significant reduction in the
current rate of loss of biological diversity’. Countdown 2010 and the
World Conservation Union (IUCN) and other partners assist governments
worldwide in moving closer to this 2010 biodiversity target.
We invite you to educate yourself about the issue of biodiversity and
the crucial work to be done, by visiting the Countdown 2010 website at www.countdown2010.net!

Quote
of the Quarter - by Peter Matthiessen
”I
used to work for a man in California, he ran the great
food strike there; he is a Mexican American, and one
of our great Americans, although he is not recognized
as such. His name is César Chávez. He always said, 'if
everybody would do something, we could turn this thing
around in six months.' It’s true. What’s
happening now is simply not enough. Everybody is not
doing something. Most won’t do anything…
There’s an enormous mass of humanity which we
have not educated enough.... How do we educate them?
How do we wake up this monster of indifference?”
–Peter Matthiessen, Writer, Environmental
Activist, Naturalist, & Explorer, speaking at NWM’s
symposium,
"Creative Approaches to Climate Change," October
5, 2007, in Brussels, Belgium
